History of Portal Golf Club

Portal Golf Club situated in Tarporley Cheshire boasts a rich history that dates back to its inception as Oaklands Golf Club in 1990. Over the years, it has evolved into a premier golfing destination now known as Macdonald Portal Golf & Spa Resort.
Oaklands Golf Club officially opened on 14th May 1990 with a pro-am event followed by its opening to members on 15th May. The course was designed by PGA professional Tim Rouse and constructed by Weaver Homes. Notably, the clubhouse design was inspired by architectural styles observed during the directors visit to Florida. Bert Platt, a past president owned the land and had secured planning permission for a golf course before its sale.

The early days were challenging; a drought during construction led to the loss of several greens, which had to be repaired with clay-based turf. Financial pressures were also significant, with interest rates from 6-16% during the construction period.
In 1995, the club was acquired by Arderne Plc which already owned the adjacent Championship course. Arderne Plc’s main shareholders included Ferranti, with Michael Taylor serving as CEO and David Wills a PGA touring professional, as a director.

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts later acquired the entire complex, transforming it into the Macdonald Golf & Spa Resort. The resort now features three golf courses, the Championship, the Premier and the 9-hole Arderne course.
