President : Pat Roper

Pat and his wife Jackie moved to Cheshire in 1997 and both joined the club that year. Due to the pressure of work he didn’t play regularly until retirement in 2012 after working in the chemical industry for 37 years. He began to play more after retirement and decided to rejoin the club when his wife Jackie was Lady Captain in 2012, becoming Captain himself in 2016. He now plays off a respectable 20 handicap (some would say a bit of a bandit!).

Since 2015 Pat has run an annual Charity CUPS day at Portal, inviting chemical companies to play in the event which makes a substantial amount each year for the Captains’ charities.

He is passionate about the Club and wishes to support the Captains in any way he can, especially increasing social events, on and off the course. Pat is very impressed with the quality of the Captains at Portal and will do all he can to support them in the coming years.

Captain 2019 - Neil Tidd

With a background in the military, during his travels Neil played social golf at many different courses throughout the UK and overseas. It was the warm welcome he received at Portal Golf Club which convinced him to join, to gain his first official handicap and, with his wife Sharon, get involved in many different aspects of the club.

Neil is keen to encourage and support all types of play, be it social or competition golf, and during his year as Captain he also hopes to provide a mix of social events where members can get together after their round and/or later in the evening.

Neil is married to Sharon and has 3 grownup daughters; the eldest, having caught the golfing bug at Portal, is planning to continue playing as she starts out on her own military career.

Lady Captain 2019 - Anne Paton

Anne spent her early years growing up in Newton-le Willows. She moved to Hertfordshire in her teens and studied at teachers' training college in Southampton. The first 20 years of married life was spent as an RAF wife, moving around the country and spending two tours overseas in Hong Kong and Brunei. She and Barry then moved to Bunbury 25 years ago when Barry left the Air Force and joined the Air Lines.

Anne started her teaching career in the leafy lanes of Hertfordshire and finished in Crewe! After progressing to the dizzy heights of Head of Early Years, on retirement, being the only member of her family not to have played golf, she took up the challenge(...and says she should have done it years ago).

Again this year the Captains decided to have two charities and split the proceeds.  Neil's chosen charity, considering his links with the military not surprising, is the British Legion and Anne has a personal interest in Clatterbridge. She says her charity was a easy choice having experienced and seen at first hand the care and commitment that all the staff give at Clatterbridge, no one ever gives up hope there.
We wish both Captains a happy and successful year with lots of sunshine!
